Renovation of a kindergarten with an expansion of a crèche
The obsolete, uneconomic and pedagogically deficient building is undergoing an energetically refurbishment. The Caritas Kindergarten St. Konrad was built in 1962 and receives as addition, a nursery school in lightweight timber construction. Designed under the guidelines of childcare centers the educational institution is maximized with four group rooms in the facility. The kindergarten now can house up to 75 kids. Two smaller group and napping rooms take care of 17 toddlers. The new addition articulates with a pitched roof the long narrow volume on the Western side of the facility. Separated from the main building with a spacious central playing corridor, it makes washrooms, play area, wardrobes and waiting lounge much more accessible. Visitors access the facility from the Northern car park through a common verandah, lobby and baby stroller parking area barrier-free. The basement holds a gymnastic hall, storage and M&E facilities as well as granting access to the playground and garden.
To reduce costs, the design pays significant attention to preserve the main load bearing brick walls, keeping it untouched and only corrects the space with a few opening: Existing water and power points, structural walls and openings are mostly in original position. Minimal intervention guarantees high functionality in well arranged space planning for groups and intensive care rooms with an optimal respond to pedagogical requirements.
All rooms are refurbished as child friendly under universal design guidelines and follow the current requirements planning. The interior of the existing building is dismantled to the supporting structure and refurbished with under floor heating, heat exchanger, thermal insulation under the New Energy Conservation Regulation. The project is partly funded under the communal supporting and FA-ZR program.
